Natural ways to repair ageing skin on your neck, chest and hands

If you worshipped the sun when you were in your teens and 20’s—like most of us did— the chances are you may be paying for it in unexpected ways now.

There are the obvious ways that sun damage takes its toll on your appearance: wrinkles, fine lines, and age spots on your face. But what about the rest of you?

Some of the least-talked-about and most concerning areas where UVA/UVB damage becomes apparent are on the neck, chest, and hands.
 
What makes these areas tell-tale giveaways of our age? How do we prevent, reverse, and repair that damage to the skin on our neck, chest, and hands?

There isn’t one be-all, end-all anti-ageing solution for repairing wrinkles, but there are some scientifically-backed solutions that work both inside and out for the best results all around.

 
The Problem: Rough, Dry Skin 

Why does it happen? 

Before you can find a solution to your problem, you have to first understand why it’s happening. As for rough, dry skin on your hands, neck, and chest, it begins with sun damage. The damaging UVA/UVB rays penetrate deep into the skin and break down collagen and elastin within it that are keeping your skin supple, hydrated, and smooth.

How do you prevent it? 

The simple solution is to use at least SPF 30 sunscreen even on cloudy or rainy days. It only takes 10 minutes of sun exposure to inflict lasting damage. And, if you’re worried that it might be too late to prevent sun damage, it is never too late to start taking care of your skin.

How do you repair it? 

On a daily basis, you can try introducing a topical Facial Oil, which should help to hydrate your skin as well as balancing oily, combination or dry skin.  

More long-term solutions include proper nutrition, a balanced diet, and investing in a high-quality supplement which all help to encourage the skin to repair itself from the inside out.


The Problem: Brown Spots or Age Spots

Your skin is truly amazing. As a way of protecting itself from the damaging rays of the sun, your skin naturally produces a substance that gives you that gorgeous, tanned glow during the summer. Over time, though, that can end up leaving you with permanent, blotchy brown spots, also known as age spots.

How do you prevent it?

To prevent age spots, it’s always best to wear SPF 30+. We definitely advise to use one that’s toxin-free.
 
But, to take it a step further, you can always incorporate a chic hat that’s appropriate for whatever setting you find yourself in. Nothing says “glamorous movie star” quite like a wide-brimmed hat and some oversized sunglasses while lounging by the pool. A cover up like a kimono is also an essential.
 
As for your hands? Look for a hydrating lotion that contains SPF and keep it by your side at all times.

How do you repair it? 

There are natural ways that can reduce the appearance of brown spots. One of our favourite remedies is Aloe Vera. You can buy the plant at most nurseries. Simply break off one of the leaves and rub in the gel onto your age spots. Leave for half an hour and rinse off. If you do accidentally get too much sun this is also a great natural remedy for sunburn too.

 
The Problem: Lines and Wrinkles

Why does it happen?

There are actually two major causes of the lines and wrinkles that appear on your neck, chest, and hands. You know the ones that appear when you’ve slept on your side? They happen to just about everyone at one point or another. They’re a fact of life but sun damage certainly encourages them to appear sooner. Free radicals from the sun, oxidative damage, glycation, and other sources can accelerate the processes that lead to those wrinkles and lines by damaging collagen and elastin.

How do you prevent it?

Because there are so many factors involved in causing wrinkles and lines on your neck, hands, and chest, you can go about preventing them in several ways. Most importantly, you can limit your exposure to the sun, and when you absolutely have to be out and about, make sure you’ve got sunscreen handy.

Another factor you can control is your exposure to toxic environmental elements, such as cigarette smoke. Even second-hand smoke can cause premature ageing of your skin, so be conscious of the amount of smoke you allow yourself to be around. Whenever possible, opt for non-smoking areas when you’re out and about and non-smoking rooms in hotels.

As for the role that glycation plays in wrinkles and lines on your chest, neck, and hands, it’s best to avoid foods that contain refined sugar in them.
