What is oxidative damage?
While oxygen is absolutely vital for life, the byproducts of its reactions are a major cause of ageing, through irreparable oxidative damage to our cells. These byproducts, such as free radicals, are highly reactive. They have a missing electron and seek to scavenge one from other molecules. In so doing, they are liable to set off dangerous and damaging chain reactions. If they affect a cell’s DNA, they can be responsible for a wide range of degenerative diseases.
How does the body deal with oxidative damage?
The body uses antioxidants to neutralise free radicals. Antioxidants transfer an electron to the free radicals, thus stabilising them ready for elimination.

What is telomere shortening?

What is DNA Damage?

DNA damage can block certain functions and actually accelerate the death of a cell. DNA damage that is left unrepaired but does not kill a cell, can result in mutations when the cell divides, that is, the error is now present on both DNA strands.

DNA damage can be recognised by enzymes in the cell and repaired by copying the relevant undamaged sequence from the complementary DNA strand. Mutations in which neither strand of DNA contains the correct template for repair are no longer recognised as errors and, therefore, will not be repaired by the body. If the mutation impairs the survival of the cell then the effects of the damage are self-limiting. However, if the mutation does not impair the cell’s ability to survive and replicate, the multiplication of mutant cells, especially in frequently-dividing cells, can give rise to cancer. In contrast, DNA damage and mutations in infrequently-dividing cells is a prominent cause of ageing and age-related conditions.

The effects of inflammation depend upon the ability of tissues to repair. For instance, cells with little to no regenerative capacity, including neurons, cardiac cells and skeletal muscle cells, would be especially vulnerable to the effects of inflammation. In contrast, skin cells continue to proliferate throughout life; thus, wounds to the skin are usually easily healed.
Diets rich in saturated fats, trans fats and foods with a high glycemic index stimulate inflammation. In contrast, adherence to the Mediterranean diet, a diet rich in monounsaturated fatty acids, fruits, vegetables, nuts, beans and whole grains, helps prevent chronic inflammation.
