What are night sweats?

Night sweats, also known as sleep hyperhidrosis, refer to excessive sweating during the night, often to the point where it soaks through clothing and bedding. This condition can be disruptive to sleep and may be associated with an underlying medical issue.

There are various potential causes of night sweats, including:

  1. Menopause: Women going through menopause often experience night sweats due to hormonal changes.

  2. Infections: Certain infections, such as tuberculosis or HIV/AIDS, can cause night sweats.

  3. Hormonal disorders: Disorders like hyperthyroidism (an overactive thyroid) can lead to excessive sweating, including at night.

  4. Cancer: Some types of cancer, particularly lymphoma, can be associated with night sweats.

  5. Medications: Certain medications, such as antidepressants or medications that lower fever, may cause night sweats as a side effect.

  6. Idiopathic hyperhidrosis: In some cases, night sweats may occur without an obvious cause.

If you or someone you know is experiencing persistent night sweats, it's important to consult with a healthcare professional. They can help identify the underlying cause and recommend appropriate treatment. Night sweats are considered a symptom rather than a specific medical condition, so the treatment approach will depend on the underlying cause.
