How to Improve Dry Skin  

Itchy, dry skin can be a nightmare and make you feel self-conscious too. But there are some simple ways you can keep skin smooth, moisturised and nourished without much effort at all. 

When you’re plagued with dry skin it can feel like an endless battle to keep it moisturised. So fortunately, there are a number of different ways you can lock that moisture in easily and inexpensively for more radiant looking and less scratchy skin.

What Causes Dry Skin?

Dry skin is quite simply skin which doesn’t retain enough moisture and there are several reasons why this might happen.

From showering too often, to ageing, the soap you use and the climate you live in, there are numerous reasons your skin dries out.

So while skin is often drier in the colder winter weather due to the lower levels of moisture in the air, dry skin can strike all year round and here’s how you can banish it!

Consistency is key when it comes to keeping dry skin at bay. So whatever steps you take, make sure you keep doing them.

Shower less - showering for too long can strip the skin of the natural oils and leave it dried out.  Limit your time under the tap to 5-10 minutes and stick to one shower a day if possible. 

Reduce the heat - just as you should cut down on the time you spend in the shower you should reduce the heat too. Luke warm water is much better for your skin than very hot water.

Cut back on soap - many soaps are harsh and can dry your skin out, so you might want to opt for a soap-free cleanser instead. Also perfumed products or ones containing alcohol will strip away the natural oils.

Dry gently - it can be tempting to jump out of the shower and quickly rub yourself dry with your towel but if you’re too harsh it can damage the skin. Instead try blotting yourself dry with the towel.

Moisturise when damp - to maximise the benefits of moisturising it’s best to do it when your skin is still damp. It will help seal in the moisture and keep it sufficiently nourished. 

Don’t pick - very dry skin can be uncomfortably itchy but it’s important not to scratch it because it’ll make it worse.
