Running a charity, delivering inspirational speeches and looking after her family leaves Tessy with little free time – but her empowering realisation that she’s “not a superwoman and that strength also lies in knowing when to rest and recharge” keeps her life in balance. Tessy’s self-care routine is critical to her success, and she relies on Morning & Night to give her the energy to do what moves her.

Sitting Down with Diana Award CEO, Tessy Ojo, CBE
Author: Rachel Chalmers
A Morning & Night subscriber since 2023, Tessy Ojo’s passion for ‘holistic balance’ is matched only by her dedication to serving and empowering others. As CEO of The Diana Award, trustee of Comic Relief and founder of Tessy's Brunches, Tessy’s far-reaching philanthropic work has earned her a prestigious CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) – a royal honour awarded for significant contributions at a national level, just one step away from damehood.
A woman driving change for the next generation...
With more than two decades of work in the charitable sector and various awards under her belt, Tessy continues to give children and young people the skills they’ll need to thrive in a challenging world. BBC describes Tessy as “passionate about empowering and engaging young people in social action; helping them reach their full potential by creating access and opportunities for skills development and character building,” and her work has been recognised on a global scale. With social justice, youth leadership and social equity at the heart of her advocacy, Tessy became the first-ever British national to be awarded the prestigious Martin Luther King Award, given in recognition of her innovative approach to humanitarian work.
In celebration of Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day, we’re sitting down with our hand-picked selection of women to watch – members of our #LumityCollective who believe in Morning & Night’s ability to support women in reaching personal and professional goals. What does wellness mean to you?
Wellness, for me, is about holistic balance – mental, emotional, and physical. It’s about knowing my limits and recognising when to pause. Taking care of myself allows me to continue pouring into others.
What’s inspiring you in life right now?
Right now, I am deeply inspired by the impact of my work—seeing how young people and women are reclaiming their voices, stepping into their power, and reshaping narratives that were once written for them. Whether through The Diana Award’s work in youth development or Tessy's Brunches as a space for women’s empowerment, I am witnessing real transformation. There is something profoundly powerful about being part of a movement that is not just about inspiring change but actively creating it. Knowing that every conversation, every initiative, and every connection made is helping someone embrace their full potential is what fuels me daily. The work is not always easy, but seeing lives transformed makes every challenge worth it.
What’s one book you believe everyone should read?
I would recommend “Hood Feminism: Notes from the Women That a Movement Forgot” by Mikki Kendall. This book is a powerful and thought-provoking read that challenges mainstream feminism to be more inclusive, intersectional, and reflective of the real issues affecting women, particularly Black women and women from marginalised backgrounds. Mikki Kendall highlights how feminism cannot simply be about empowerment in boardrooms – it must also address access to education, healthcare, food security, and safety. This book is essential reading for anyone who wants to better understand feminism in its entirety, ensuring that no woman is left behind in the fight for equality.
What’s the one self-care ritual you always make time for, no matter what?
A manicure! No matter how busy I get, I always make time for it. It’s my way of pausing and taking care of myself.
What’s your Morning drink of choice?
Coffee – I can’t start my day without it!
What's your Evening drink of choice?
A good matcha on my way home from work to unwind, and a very cold Pepsi Max after dinner – it’s my little treat.
Feel-good food?
Any flavoursome soul food – food that’s rich, comforting, and full of love.

How would you describe your wellness routine?
My wellness routine is rooted in intentionality – being deeply attuned to my body’s needs and honouring them without guilt. It’s about recognising that I am not a superwoman and that strength also lies in knowing when to rest and recharge. I prioritise quality sleep, proper hydration, and nourishment, ensuring that I listen to my body when it signals the need for rest or recalibration. I also take supplements that support my overall well-being, ensuring my body gets the essential nutrients it needs to function at its best. Wellness, for me, is not just about physical health but also about emotional and mental balance – allowing myself grace, setting boundaries, and embracing my vulnerabilities as part of my strength.
Three things you’re loving right now?
1. Empowering young people – Seeing them step into leadership roles and use their voices for change inspires me every day.
2. Creating spaces for women to thrive – Whether through mentorship or community building, I love fostering environments where women can grow together. This is why I founded Tessy's Brunches.
3. Advocating for equity - It’s about recognising different starting points and ensuring that everyone has the support and opportunities they need to thrive.
What’s the best advice you’d offer to your younger self?
Love your height – it will be your superpower in the future. What you once saw as something that made you stand out in ways you weren’t always comfortable with will become one of your greatest strengths. You will walk into rooms with presence, command attention without saying a word, and carry yourself with a confidence that inspires others. Own it. Every part of who you are was divinely crafted for the incredible journey ahead.
What makes you feel empowered?
Leading initiatives that create real change, watching the next generation step into their power, and knowing that my work is making a difference in people’s lives.
When do you feel the most inspired?
When I’m engaging with young leaders, hearing their ideas, and seeing their passion in action. Their energy and determination fuel my own.

Which three women do you admire and draw inspiration from?
Michelle Obama – She embodies grace, intelligence, and an unwavering commitment to service. Her ability to use her platform to advocate for education, mental health, and the empowerment of young people is deeply inspiring. She has redefined leadership by showing that strength and empathy go hand in hand.
Diana, Princess of Wales – Her compassion, courage, and dedication to humanitarian work continue to leave a lasting legacy. She had the rare ability to connect with people from all walks of life, breaking down barriers with kindness and authenticity. Her work with marginalised communities, particularly young people, has been a huge inspiration in my own mission with The Diana Award.
My Mum – She was the epitome of resilience, wisdom, and unconditional love. Her unwavering belief in me, her ability to lead with both strength and grace, and her constant encouragement shaped me into the woman I am today. She taught me the value of service, the importance of standing firm in my beliefs, and the beauty of lifting others as you rise.
What helps you feel good?
Being surrounded by purpose-driven people. Seeing the impact of my work and knowing that I’ve played a part in empowering others always lifts my spirit.
Who is part of your community, and how do you support one another?
I am a firm believer in the power of sisterhood. This belief is what led me to found Tessy's Brunches, a movement dedicated to empowering and uplifting women. This is my tribe, my community – a space where women come together to share, support, and elevate one another. It is a sisterhood built on authenticity, encouragement, and mutual growth. We create opportunities to have honest conversations, provide each other with resources, and ensure that no woman ever feels alone in her journey. Whether it’s through mentorship, networking, or simply holding space for one another, the heart of our community lies in the unwavering commitment to lifting as we climb. And the beauty of it? It’s open to all women who believe in collective empowerment.
One piece of advice you’d give to all women striving to find or build an empowering community?
Surround yourself with people who uplift and challenge you. Authentic connections are everything – find those who inspire, support, and push you to be your best self. And most importantly, be that person for others, too. And if you are looking for an authentic community to be part of, then join us at Tessy's Brunches.
