How to know if your facial cleanser is working: do cleansers work?

Cleansing your skin is the very first step in your day and night skincare regime and without it you're leaving your skin prone to clogged pores and breakouts.

Facial cleansers are used to remove dirt, grime, bacteria, makeup and oil from the surface of the skin, but with so many on the market it can be difficult to determine which one works for you.

So how do you know if your cleanser is actually working and what are the signs that it’s not?

How do I know if my facial cleanser is working?

  1. Your skin should be clean
  2. Your skin should feel nourished
  3. Your skin should feel soft and smooth

The right cleanser should remove all dirt and makeup without you having to scrub to get it off. Your face should feel refreshed, have a little glow and be soft to touch. While it is beneficial to put on your Lumity Skin Nutrients Facial Oil while your skin is still damp, you shouldn't feel you desperately need to hydrate your skin because your cleanser has left your skin too dry.

How do I know if my cleanser isn’t working?

  1. Your skin isn’t clean
  2. Your skin feels tight
  3. Your skin feels dry
  4. Your skin feels too oily
  5. Your skin feels itchy
  6. Your skin feels irritated

There’s a reason people are stepping away from soaps in favour of nourishing cleansers. Soap can be too harsh on skin, but then so can many cleansers. A sure-fire sign your cleanser isn’t doing its job is if your skin feels dry and tight after cleansing. If it’s been stripped of its natural oils it can become incredibly dehydrated, flaky and itchy too. This is not a good base for your skincare regime.

Although you want your skin to feel clean, it shouldn’t feel squeaky clean and painfully tight and of course if your skin is still dirty your cleanser isn't working either.

Do facial cleansers work?

It’s all about picking the right cleanser for your skin type to ensure it’s working efficiently.

Foam, gel, clay and bar cleansers are great for oily and combination skin, while dry skin benefits from cream cleansers and Micellar water.

Oil cleansers and next generation cleansers like Lumity’s Cleansing Balmr are great for most skin types and since the latter is also a makeup remover, gentle exfoliator and a facial mask you get so much more out of it than just clean skin... just look at the results from the consumer trial.

What do advanced facial cleansers do?

Many cleansers are going above and beyond with what they can do, but this also means they sometimes add more chemicals to combat skin woes such as acne.

Lumity’s Cleansing Balm is 100% natural and formulated with 31 botanical ingredients which hydrate, smooth and renew and is great for just about any skin type.

The fact the balm removes makeup, cleanses deeply, exfoliates and is a nourishing mask treatment too reduces the need for a plethora of other beauty products and ensures skin can be cleansed without irritation day in, day out.
